Tucked away on West 11th Street, stands Turks & Frogs, a wine bar named for its offerings–a number of Turkish varietals on a French-centric list.  Cathy and I were curious.  Great wines come from Bulgaria, Greece isn’t far, and Georgia turns a curious eye.   Turkey, with an ancient history of making wine, has in recent history, produced mostly table grapes.  From travels years ago, I know the likes of Efes Pilsen and raki, but nothing of the wineries along the sea of Marmara.   (more…)

After scoring a sweet pair of boots at Century 21, I headed up West Broadway to Franklin, where I found the  Vinovino Wine Bar Wine Shop.  At a few minutes past five, I practically had the place to myself.  By the time I left at around seven, the bar was a little livelier, but far from packed.  Perhaps the downtown crowd had lost its heel, in the face of this week’s financial crash.  Or maybe Vinovino is somehow off the beaten track… (more…)

The tasting room at Vintage New York, a division of Rivendell Winery in the Hudson Valley, offers a unique approach to tasting local wines.  With thirty-six wines available on the short list (most of which cost only $8 or $10 a glass), this is a fair-priced option for the indecisive (like me), who might be advised to avoid the big list-an offering of over 200 varieties of New York State wines, all of which are available by the glass. Thursday night’s somewhere else was a slice of paradise.  So what if it’s not a wine bar? The thought of sipping outdoors at Pure Food and Wine inspired Caitlin and I to walk a few blocks east.  Located at 54 Irving Place, this raw food restaurant has a tiny outdoor lounge with a comfy bench and few chairs arranged at the front of its exterior and one of New York’s grandest dining gardens tucked away behind. I’m a huge fan of rieslings, but only the dry stuff, so I was delighted to discover upon disembarking downtown that the Riesling & Co.’s world tour was plenty stocked with mouth-puckering, steely, bone-dry wines.

With 39 tables to visit in three hours, this was not an event for the meek or weak.  With our booklets in hand (being a German affair, each table was numbered and charted, with a listing of every producer and wine), at times, my friend Jenn and I were jostled around tables, where I often had to aggressively elbow my way in.
