While it wasn’t actual Champagne that was served aboard the Classic Harbor Line Manhattan, but rather some kind of Brut, I was able to overlook the false advertising because it was all you could drink. Yep. Shortly after leaving Pier 59, the bar opened, and for 90 minutes, all passengers could frequent the bar for as much complimentary “Champagne” as they liked (without ever having to wait long on line).
Positioning ourselves wisely, my husband Carlos and I took to the deck and stood at the prow, where we sipped and savored Olafur Eliasson’s waterfalls, along with majestic views of Lady Liberty and the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges, on a Sunday afternoon.
And while this entry feels like a bit of a cheat, aboard the Manhattan is one of the loveliest places to drink sparkling wine. When I went to the bar to order my Nth glass, the woman behind the counter said, Don’t order sheepishly. We encourage you to drink as much as you like. As long as there’s no dancing atop the tables nor stripping, you can keep coming back.
And so, with my clothes intact, I did just that.
